The monumental sculpture comes from the Collegiate Church of St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne. It probably served as a cross atop a triumphal arch. The diagonal position of the body and the raised right arm become standard features of cologne crucifixes modelled on the Gero cross made around 970.
