To two letters, dated August 1562, in which Michelangelo’s nephew, Leonardo, was asked by two Michelangelo assistants to send to his uncle in Rome the carpentry tools to craft the wood. It could be that Michelangelo wanted to give this crucifix as a gift to his nephew. In the correspondence of Michelangelo there are others that mention the “box” sent to Rome by Leonardo. Finally, a letter sent to Leonardo by Tiberio Calcagni presents Michelangelo at work on “your wooden Christ” “vostro Christo di legniame”.
