The astonishing figure of Christ is captured at the moment of his last breath. The face - not distorted in pain, but almost serene in surrending to death - shows all the sorrowing humanity, while the sculptor's magisterial execution is exalted in the refined modelling ant the careful anatomical rendering of the feature. Such elements, in order to get naturalness and adherence to reality, recall the late-Gothic art of Gentile da Fabriano. Probably the painting layer is due to Taddeo di Bartolo.
