In this depiction of Jesus on the crucifix, he is alive and free of suffering, as can be seen from his open eyes and serene expression. He is shown as the King of Kings, wearing a crown on his head. The piece has remnants of gilded bronze, and turquoise and blue champlevé enamel. This enameling technique was frequently used in Romanesque and Gothic art. Its name means "raised field" in French. The process consists of creating depressions in the base to be filled with enamel that is then polished to create a smooth surface. The technical characteristics suggest this piece may come from Limoges in France.
