The painting from the Karl Ernst Osthaus collection was initially owned by the Folkwang Museum in Hagen. Originally it belonged to a large altar of the Passion. The group of mourners under the cross is confronted with a “group of perpetrators” consisting of soldiers and Pharisees. The depiction with few figures in the foremost plane of the picture allowed for contemplative immersion in Christ’s sacrificial death.
