Cross-shaped brooches were widely used throughout the Frankish Empire as a symbol of the acceptance of the Christian faith. The brooch from Hamburg is the northernmost example of an extremely rare type of brooch. It is made of a copper alloy and has been seriously damaged by corrosion. Nevertheless, several decorative glass beads remain intact.
