Educator Christian F. Klebsattel wrote about the last known ship to bring slaves from Africa to the United States in his article, “Slaves Captured in Africa in 1859 and Brought to Mobile and Sold the Same Year.” He discussed the slave ship Clotilda (or Clotilde), which arrived in Mobile Bay in 1859 carrying approximately 110 slaves. Klebsattel's article is based on his discussion with Cudjo Lewis, one of the Africans brought to Mobile, pictured here.
