Berlin, Germany

This great stone figure was erected in prominent locations throughout the steppes around AD 1200 by the Turkic-speaking Cumans, who ruled south Russia between 1055 and 1240. It represents a man in typical dress and bearing traditional weapons; it was regarded as providing a home for the souls of the deceased. Between 1883 and 1902 the Museum aquired four such figures.
