Glenn Hammond Curtiss came to be known as "The Father of Naval Aviation" and "Founder of the American Aircraft Industry". He was a remarkable engineer, beginning his career as a successful motorcycle manufacturer. In 1905, Curtiss won first prize in the five mile motorcycle race with a time of 6 minutes and 24 2/5 seconds at the Second Annual Race Meet in New York.
