Cup Fragment with Man's Head

The conch shell that this fragment was originally a part of would have been used for drinking the “black drink”. Brewed from holly, a toxic plant, the black drink contained more than 300% of the caffeine found in a modern cup of coffee. The effects of the drink, taken during ceremonies, would have been quite strong. The projection from the dancer’s mouth in the image might be vomit, as it was reported by contemporary sources that the drink would commonly cause this during the festivities.
