Cup with fretwork decoration of a young fowler

Faenza workshop1577

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

Palazzo Madama - Museo Cup in Faenza “white ware”, made from the mid-sixteenth century with new shapes and a more sculptural rendering made possible by the rich white glaze. The figured decoration is simple, and often made with light touches of the brush, with a palette of only blue and yellow. These products were very successful and spread far and wide, bringing to the Faenza workshops orders and commissions from all over Europe. Encouraged by this growing demand, many ceramists left their home towns in search of fortune elsewhere. This was true of the craftsman who created this cup which, on the back, states “Made in Turin, on the 12th day of September, 1577”.Civico d'arte Antica
