The painting came to form part of the Academy’s collection in 1845, together with a group of twelve paintings from the Capitoline picture gallery (a group of works considered “inconvenient” because they featured female nudes). Here the artist portrays the moment in which Psyche’s languid gaze falls for the first time on the face of her lover.
