The attack on the Custom House on 25 May 1921 by the Dublin Brigade of the IRA was led by Oscar Traynor. It was intended as a grand gesture, an attack on a building that symbolised British authority. The majority of actions carried out previously by the IRA had been attacks of a guerrilla nature on RIC stations and the military.
