SCOTTISH ABADAN D/TAN Erected on the same site as the old buildings dating from 1924, the new Grangemouth Oil Refinery was built on the Firth of Forth by Scottish Oils Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. Started in 1949, it went into operation in 1951, with maximum annual crude oil capacity of 2,500,000 tons, helping to counteract the Abadan collapse. Its main objective is high-grade motor spirit, and it also supplies the raw material for the production of petroleum chemicals. To cope with its capacity of 30,000 barrels, or just over 1,000,000 gallons a day of imported crude oil, it was decided to establish an installation at Finnart, on Loch Long, and run a pipeline from there to the refinery, this being more convenient than using the old Grangemouth Docks exclusively. The approximate cost of the combined projeet was £15,000,000. PHOTO SHOWS: A general view of the phosphoric acid plant at the Grangemouth Oil Refinery.
