Artus Quellinus the Elder1650 - 1654

Royal Palace Amsterdam

Royal Palace Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Cybele is portrayed as a woman in a long tunic. She wears a crown in the shape of a turreted city wall. She holds a trumpet and keys. At her feet are a standing lion and a lioness couchant.

Additional information:
Cybele is the earth goddess. She travels in a chariot drawn by lions. With her keys, she unlocks the earth in spring and locks it again in autumn. The trumpet is an attribute of Fame and is perhaps shown to emphasise the importance of the planet.
