“Cypress domes” develop when bald cypress trees take root in depressions in the limestone bedrock. Taller cypress grow in the deepest water and smaller ones grow along the basin’s edge, creating a dome-like shape. Wet year-round, they provide refuge for alligators which, in turn, dig the depressions wider and deeper.
