Joe Fafard (b. 1942- 2019 )
Joe Fafard is well known for his sculptural achievements. Born into a French-Canadian family in rural Saskatchewan, Fafard was one of Canada’s leading professional artists, living and working his entire career on the Canadian prairies. Fafard’s oeuvre has as its focus Saskatchewan subject matter, with an emphasis on tradition and familiarity. He is widely recognized as having significantly raised the profile of Saskatchewan and Canadian art on the national stage. His work has been exhibited in major galleries and museums across Canada and around the world.
Joe Fafard received high praise and recognition for his work throughout his career. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1981 and awarded the Architectural Institute of Canada Allied Arts Award in 1987. He received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2002, the National Prix Montfort in 2003, the Lieutenant Governor’s Saskatchewan Centennial Medal for the Arts in 2005 and the Saskatchewan Arts Board Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Fafard was recognized with three honorary doctorates: from the University of Regina in 1989, the University of Manitoba in 2007 and from the University of Saskatchewan in June of 2012.
