Aelbert Cuypc.1640

Dulwich Picture Gallery
London, United Kingdom

Painted early in the artist’s career when he was still under the influence of his master Jan van Goyen, this little signed work was until recently not in an appropriate state to exhibit. state. Someone, probably Sir Francis Bourgeois in the 1790s or early 1800s, had seen fit to ‘improve’ this tiny masterpiece with some foreground cows and an extra 9cm of sky at the top.

Recent conservation has not only removed these clumsy additions, but also revealed a tiny fisherman in a boat.
