The night of 9th December is also known as "Daikokusama no Otoshiya", whereby Daikokuten, the god of five cereals, welcomed his wife.
Roasted beans, roasted rice and bright red radish were offered to the god, while black soybean and Japanese white radish dishes were eaten to wish for a bountiful harvest and a long line of descendants. By using common crops from the fields such as beans and Daikon radish as offerings to Daikokuten, farmers show their faith in him as a god of agriculture.
