Caption on back reads: 'In response to the government's appeal a number of boys volunteered for the coal mines and have already started their training at the Markham Main Colliery, Armthorpe, near Doncaster. The preliminary instruction is part of the long range scheme of training and education which will open for the boys possibilities of free studies up to University degree standard. The first volunteers receive practical instruction on the spot under the supervision of older workmen and safety officers'.
