Possagno, Italy

Canova's tempera paintings, among his most beautiful paintings, were made between 1796 and 1807. They are graceful figures of nymphs and dancers, inspired by the pleasant wall images that Canova had visited in the excavations of Herculaneum, in 1779. They are recognizable by the black backgrounds and the playful and fascinating setting.
