The curving, sensual dancer resembles the divine entertainers of medieval Hindu sculpture and may be associated with Jainism, popular in states like Rajasthan. She is putting on her heavy ankle bracelet, which forms a musical accompaniment to her dance. Jainism was founded in the 6th century B.C. by Vardhamana Mahavira. It is an austere religion similar to Buddhism, but Jain art incorporates many Hindu forms. This is one of few Jain works in the Dallas Museum of Art.
