A panorama of the city of Gdansk. In the foreground, three strolling couples wearing traditional outfits. Further off in the distance, there are more strolling, or working figures. In the background, a panorama of the city dominated by a Gothic cathedral in the middle. On the left, a harbour, the mouth of the Vistula River, and a fragment of the sea. Along the top edge, the coats of arms of Poland and Gdansk, and a cartouche informing about the city's name: “Dantzigt”. This coloured copper-plate engraving comes from the last volume of Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg’s „Civitates orbis terrarum” of 1617. The first volume of "Civitates Orbis terrarum” was published in Köln in 1572, the last and final volume appeared in 1617. The huge atlas of cities contains 546 panoramas, bird's eye views, and maps of cities from all over the word.
