Born in Ikerrasak, Northwest Territories, Kenojuak Ashevak spent most of her life living on the land in a manner not unlike her ancestors, traveling from camp to camp in South Baffin and Arctic Quebec, as hunting dictated. Perhaps the most internationally recognized of all Inuit artists, Kenojuak received the Order of Canada in 1967 and was also elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1974. Three of her images have been released as Canadian postage stamps. Her work, a signature style being simple, direct and vivacious, has attracted art collectors and delighted audiences around the world.
