During the excavations in the Cathedral Square (Domplatz), the remains of a casting pit for bells from the 11th century were discovered. The finding was so well preserved that two of the bells could be reconstructed and re-poured at the bell foundry Rincker in Sinn (Hessen). The smaller bell shown here weights 155 kilograms and has a diameter of 62.8 centimetres. The wall thickness of the bell is up to 16 millimetres and its strike note is on ‘D’. The bell's oscillation period is about 145 seconds; even modern bells rarely achieve this.
