On the left inside the arch, David has just felled the Philistine giant Goliath with a pebble from his sling. The pebble has struck Goliath between the eyes, knocking him to the ground. David is about to cut off the giant’s head. On the left, the Israelites are overjoyed because David’s victory has freed them from the threat of Philistine slavery. On the right, the Philistines are fleeing in dismay. Above Goliath, the ghastly Medusa is spewing her venom on the Philistines. On the left, an angel offers David a palm frond and a kingly crown, symbols of victory.
Additional information:
The Old Testament figure of David symbolised courage and righteousness. William of Orange was sometimes compared to him because, just as David freed Israel from the Philistines, so William delivered the Dutch from the Spaniards.
