Mit gespreizten Beinen steht der jugendliche, feingekleidete David über dem abgeschlagenen Haupt des Philisters Goliath (1. Samuel 17, 50-51). Er verkörpert, wie auch die Davidskulpturen von Donatello, Verrocchio und Michelangelo, den Freiheitswillen und die Wehrbereitschaft des Stadtstaates Florenz im 15. Jahrhundert.
