Davui (Trumpet shell)

Davui. Trumpet shell. Shell (bursa lampas) with a thick cord of magimagi (coconut sennit) lashing attached through a drilled hole at base end. The davui produces long range sound when blown. Small finger hole cut into the side of the shell to vary the pitch. The shell is cut off at the tip of its spire, with the opening intended to act as the mouthpiece. Outer surface of the shell is off white with areas of brown colour. Inner cavity of the shell is an off white colour. Fine cords of magimagi in a tali tolu (3-ply) braid are lashed together to create the thick hose-like attachment, round in cross-section, formed into a large loop and flared loose ends.
