Diana, Princess of Wales wore this day dress with a jacket (not shown) in 1983 during an official tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Clothes for royal official visits overseas are carefully chosen for the planned activities, climate and culture of the host country. The day dress and jacket were cut in comfortable, light silk to accommodate the New Zealand heat and the bold turquoise colour ensured the Princess could be seen by the large crowds.
Catherine Walker designed the dress under the Chelsea Design Company label. Catherine Walker worked with Diana, Princess of Wales from 1981 onwards. She was able to devote a large part of her time and business to designing for the Princess, and they had a close partnership.
