Shirt-waister style dress, of light yellow cotton printed with an oriental inspired design of flowers and oriental style inscriptions. Short sleeves and centre front fastening with black buttons. Self-fabric belt at waist. The dress is labelled 'Super Tremendo - non-iron cotton'.

Known as a shirt-waister, this popular style of dress combines elements of femininity from the New Look with the everyday practicalities needed by most 1950s women. The skirt is full and the shoulder line is rounded; yet the simple construction makes it comfortable and not restrictive, unlike couture dresses.

The dress was originally worn by the donor's grandmother, who lived in Bradley near Skipton, North Yorkshire. It the late 1960s the dress was given to the donor who was then a student at Leeds College of Art, where she studied Dress Design & Garment Construction. The donor then went onto study at London College of Fashion. The donor wore the dress throughout the 1960s and 70s.
