Dead Child

Candido Portinari1945

Projeto Portinari

Projeto Portinari
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Composition in white, blue, gray, ochre and earthy tones. Unidentified texture. Contour lines define the figures, enhancing the expressiveness of the composition. It depicts squalid figures of refugees with dead child. In the center of the composition, man sitting in front, undefined volume, with dead child on his lap. He has a triangular face with defined facial features, his left hand over his forehead; the boy is lying on his right arm and supported on open legs. He wears a sleeved shirt, long pants and is barefoot. The boy seems to have no hair, has suggested facial features, prominent stomach, right arm half-folded over his stomach and is naked. To the left of the composition, kneeling woman, her head leaning on the man's back. She stands with hands covering her face and wears a dress. Behind the woman, stretched legs of a person who is lying on the floor with a gourd at their side. To the right of the composition, flanking the man, suggestion of more kneeling figures crying. In front of the composition, skeletal dog with visible ribs. Geometrized background.
