Death nature with shooting gear and flowers I

Jean-Baptiste Oudry1715

Both compositions, conceived as a pair, show us a beautiful garden in which there is a pile of dead game birds and shooting gear, next to a fountain with Cupids and a large vase in the first picture, and surrounding a sculpture – possibly alluding to Bacchus – and a vase with different flowers, in the second. In both compositions a dog is keeping watch, and in the background of both pictures there is a building in a distant wood. The decorative nature and diversity of the motifs is combined with the Nordic exuberance and insets of pagan sculpture that come from Italy. The dead and living birds are reproduced on a minor scale. Likewise frequent in his still lifes is the pug-nosed dog, a typical Basset hound that the artist often uses and that can also be seen in his canvases in Stockholm Museum.
