Earl Godwin was widely believed to be behind the cruel murder of King Edward's brother, Alfred. It was a crime Godwin denied being involved with. However, Godwin's sudden death (recreated in this drawing by William Blake) suited Edward, who enjoyed much better relations with Godwin's sons, particularly Harold and Tostig.
