Van Schoor originally designed this tapestry as part of a series of eight hangings depicting mythological subjects such as "Flora and Zephyr" and "Diana and Endymion." This particular panel probably depicts the wine god Bacchus and the Cretan princess Ariadne. Bacchus rescued Ariadne from the island of Naxos, where she had been abandoned. In this scene, Ariadne weds Bacchus before being carried away to live with the gods.
