Santillana del Mar (Cantabria, Spain), Spain

During the Magdalenian period, different artistic expressions achieved a high degree of naturalism and technical perfection. The flat surface of some bones, such as scapulae, became the ideal backdrop for engraving different animal figures. This piece of bone is a decorated goat scapula. The hindquarters of a bison are depicted by multiple striated, thin engravings showing the dorsal line from the hump to the tail, the hind legs and the belly. The succession of incisions in this area creates the effect of volume and animal fur.
