Ever since Clement Moore's poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in the 1830s, Americans have associated Santa with his "miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer." Many of us can probably rattle off the names of the original eight reindeer--not to mention Rudolph, the glowing-nosed creation of a Montgomery-Ward advertising promotion in the mid-20th century. This hand-carved Christmas decoration of a reindeer and sleigh makes effective use of the tensile qualities of a metal rod to arch the reindeer up above the horizontal, toward the starry night sky of Christmas Eve.
