Luckenbach was an adult student of Gustav Grunewald and succeeded him as an instructor at The Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies in the late 19th Century. The Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies was later known as Moravian Seminary and College for Women and is today, Moravian University. This painting betrays the strong influence of Grunewald and his Romantic tradition.
