The photo depicts the largest approved, non-governmental demonstration in the GDR on 4 November 1989. Employees of Berlin theaters organized the rally for freedom of the press, opinion and assembly. An estimated 200,000 people gathered at Alexanderplatz, many with self-made banners. A large part of them is now part of the collection of the Deutsches Historisches Museum.
