The writer, opera producer and composer Dennis Arundell (1898–1988) studied classics and music at St John’s College, Cambridge in the 1920s and he is depicted here in the college gatehouse room. Over the course of a long and highly successful career, he was responsible for producing the British premieres of Stravinsky’s 'Soldier’s Tale' (1928) and Janá?ek’s 'Kát’a Kabanová' (1950) in addition to operas and masques by Purcell, Handel, Britten and Honegger. He joined the staff of the Royal College of Music Opera School in 1956 and was subsequently awarded a Fellow of the Royal College of Music (FRCM) in 1971.
