Alicja Kwade’s practice deals with the borders of reality, and includes installations and sculptures, as well as photography, video, sound, and performance. Her works are concerned with challenging the ways in which reality is perceived or accepted by articulating different fields of knowledge like philosophy, science, sociology and astronomy. Kwade is interested in universal concepts and social agreements, such as time, distance, gravity, motion and balance. Kwade uses a wide range of materials, including metal, stone, mirrors, and glass, as well as found objects, such as bottles, clocks and candles. In her works, she constantly interchanges acts of repetition, mirroring, rotation, bending, casting, pulverisation, and dismantling; focusing on activating alternative modes of perception through gestures intended to challenge the human senses.

With "Dependence", Alicja Kwade launches an inquiry into the construction of physical reality. She piles different objects and everyday materials on top of each other to form a column, or a pole. In this sculpture, bringing together various elements, including a plate, a marble disk, a wooden block, tubes of various material, diameter and length, a wristwatch, a ring, and a glass, the artist addresses the multiple ways in which reality is interwoven into the context of daily routine, its components, and the interrelations that exist between these elements.
