Rafael Vargas Bernard is a Miami-based Puerto Rican noise musician, performer, and visual artist who creates installations and interactive sound sculptures, programs robots to draw for him, and uses sensors that transform colors into sound. Descojón Island 1, roughly meaning Puerto Rico is a mess, alludes to the American colony's political status and economic crisis. This piece is part of a body of work created shortly after Puerto Rico declared its debt to be "unpayable", effectively accepting it was bankrupt.
