Considered by experts as the first atlas of the modern age, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum was written by Abraham Ortelius between 1520 and 1598, the year of his death. It was first published in 1570 in Antwerp, Belgium, the birthplace of its creator. The work was extended and revised thanks to new geographic discoveries arising throughout the century. Its illustration of the Pacific Ocean includes a representation of the Victoria which makes reference to its achievement of the first circumnavigation of the world.
