A mounted preparatory sketch on paper of a design for a fan decorated with a gourd and chrysanthemum. Traces of the image on reverse are also visible. Paper fans were an essential accessory in Japan’s hot and humid summers. In this fixed or flat fan known as uchiwa, Ishibashi clearly sketched the forms lightly first and went over them again.
