This image from Adam Freitag’s book on fortresses depicts his suggestion on how to arrange a fortress by a water surface. The utmost point of the fortress proper is reinforced by a hornwork redoubt (B) and a ravelin (C). The waterfront has several jutting edges (a, b & c) for musketeers or artillery to cover an approach on the shore side. This image was most likely the inspiration when the engineer Gustaf Hoffmann designed the Danish fortress Frederiksodde.
