The maker behind this image is unclear. It was previously attributed to Giovanni Paolo Panini (c.1691-1765) and may depict a stage set from the time of his apprenticeship to the school of Bibiena, known for their Baroque stage and theatre designs. Alternatively it has been suggested that this design may have originated from the Bolognese School.
