Traditional houses in Japan often had small fitted cupboards built into an alcove, on which there would be sliding doors with painted decoration. This preparatory sketch is a design for sliding cupboard doors showing a scene of frogs on a river bank. The aquatic theme was ideal for evoking a sense of cool when using the room in summer. The oval shapes at either end of the designs indicate where the metal hand-pulls were to be placed.
