Today, with email, text messaging and ease of long distance telephone calls, it is difficult to recall the importance placed on letter writing. There was a time when owning a portable desk was a symbol of one's affluence; their use was common among society's elites. C.A. MacMeiledge purchased this friar's writing desk during his three month trip to Europe in 1929 to purchase items for the Johnsons' winter vacation home.
