This view is from a group of photographs associated with the siege of Port Hudson, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, that began May 22 and ended July 9, 1863 when the Confederate garrison surrendered after learning of the fall of Vicksburg. Shown is a view a destroyed gun emplacement and what appears to be the Mississippi River in the distance. The emplacement is littered with debris, barrels, and parts of a large cannon; a sandbag reinforced revetment is also seen.
