This view is from a group of photographs associated with the seige of Port Hudson, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, that began May 22 and ended July 9, 1863 when the Confederate garrison surrendered after learning of the fall of Vicksburg. Shown is a fortified gun emplacement and a damaged cannon. Sandbags are seen as part of the revetment, that also includes basket- like structures made of tree branches that are filled with dirt and leaves.
