Detail from a sarcophagus showing a banquet

4th century AD

National Museum of Archaeology

National Museum of Archaeology
Lisboa, Portugal

This paleochristian iconography, represents common roman funerary themes. The attire of the youths suggests a funerary context, their opposing glances suggest the opposing forces of; life, day and night sun and moon, this is a cosmic reference to the brevity of life "tempus fugit". It is a very well executed work most probably Italian in origin and from a workshop in Rome or its outskirts.
